about

This goes out to the hometown ones

I call this one ‘chicago’

There’s an episode of That 70’s Show where Jackie leaves Wisconsin to after being offered a job in Chicago, but when Kelso tries to drop her off at her motel she can’t seem to leave the car. She knows that stepping out of the car would mean beginning a new life away from everything she’s ever known. To comfort her, Kelso offers to grab a bite to eat with her before he leaves.

Today I start a new journey away from the people and places I call home. I won’t be saying goodbye to them forever as this is only a new chapter, but I’ll still miss them an awful lot.

The specific events I mention in this song were inspired by various episodes of That 70’s Show, but have also grown to remind me of all the times I’ve shared with my friends and family (even though we don’t climb water towers). In short, this song doesn’t really have anything to do with Chicago or Wisconsin.

Here’s to slow dancing in diners where the counter tiles remind you of the places you call home.

lyrics

Lyrics:

I remember when we climbed the water tower
We spent our time in the basement for hours
I left behind legos, Abba records
Driving by, I shout “so long Wisconsin”

Hello Chicago

Slow dancing in the diner with milkshakes
Tell me you’ll stay ’til I can find my way
This town’s just too small for our hearts to race
The times we spent together will remain

I remember when we held hands at Led Zeppelin
An empty pool, a keg of road beer that is full
Hang at the hub, play games and eat curly fries
I can’t believe we almost lived in an RV

Hello Chicago

Slow dancing in the diner with milkshakes
Tell me you’ll stay ’til I can find my way
This town’s just too small for our hearts to race
The times we spent together will remain

Slow dancing in the diner with milkshakes
The tiles on the counter are like Point Place
Promise you’ll stay ’til I can find my way
The times we spent together will remain
